One of Tlthe last NZ autobiographies I read was by Ruby Tui. These stories are poles apart; two completely different upbringings. However Hayley's comments regarding the multitude of after school activities she did that some can only dream of doing did highlight the affect too many hobbies and not enough downtime for young children can have and what I see some kids struggle with.
The book was typed by the author, using a stick that he manipulated with his mouth to type on a keyboard. Paul caught polio at six years old and spent the remainder of his life living in an iron lung, but managed to achieve so much despite this.
It was alright. Interesting enough to keep me reading and trying to work out who dunnit, but I didn't find it particularly funny, bloodthirsty or laugh out loudish as per the quotes on the front. If you're after that I'd recommend "It's All Fun And Games Until Someone Loses an Eye" by Christopher Brookmyre.
I'm a bit biased, my Grandpa wrote this book. It's been a labour of love since he sold the farm in 2019 and was finally completed and published in November 2025. My youngest sister put it all together for the publisher, and most of my family (myself included) tried our best to help with editing. It's very niche, but if you're from Muriwai/Waimauku/Kumeu it has lots of interesting facts, history and stories from the area. If you like farm machinery you'll also love this; my grandpa does and there's quite a lot of information about it!
I have two boys and a girl, found it interesting reading his thoughts on some boy things. I will read another of his. Ended up getting pocket knives for my boys because of it, he recommended it as something they should be allowed to do by a certain age. They're both super proud of them and have whittled many things, as he said they probably would. Have also needed many plasters haha
Another book in the series involving Hana, an ex-NZ Police detective. Has translations of the Te Reo used throughout the book and a brief explanation of customs as needed. Just as good as Better the Blood, but I've just looked at the back cover and seen there's another called Return to Blood that I appear to have missed!
This was a random find at a Salvation Army shop and I really enjoyed it.
Andrew Child has a very different writing style to Lee. Sometimes I enjoy his Jack Reacher novels, sometimes I dont. This was one that I wasnt such a fan of, but it was still a good read.
Read it to see what it was, found it in my garage. Good book.
