    By Kathryn Berkett
    5 stars

Fantastic read for parents or teachers working with teens. Always a great reminder of the different wiring and hormones that shape their behaviour

  • Carved in Blood

    By Michael Bennett
    5 stars

Love this crime series set in Auckland. The third one really picked up again and delivered a punchy ride. Great cover, great characters.

  • The Shadow Weaver

    By Ivy Cliffwater
    5 stars

A great romantasy debut filled with action, romance, revenge, great side characters and questions waiting to be revealed. 4.5 stars rounded up as it's a NZ author and a great cover too

  • Drive Me Crazy

  • There are rivers in the sky

    By Elif Shafak
    3 stars

I struggled to engage with the interwined stories though this is mainly my fault as I listened while training in the gym

  • The Last Secret Agent

By Pippa Latour with Jude Dobson
    5 stars

A fascinating insight into an amazing woman and a stalwart generation who experienced WWII. I started reading thinking I wasn't as interested in her childhood but she quickly won me over as you understood how her upbringing shaped her. Pippa doesn't hold back with her thoughts and I loved how much we got to know her as a person. You can imagine having a cup of tea and being enthralled with her no nonsense approach. A book that will stay with me as I admire her courage and tenacity. Thank you to those that encouraged Pippa to share her story before she passed, so she and so many other brave souls can be remembered.

  • Out on a Limb

    By Hannah Bonam-Young
    5 stars

Love the disability rep in this book. While guaranteed a HEA this book brought two people together with an accidental pregnancy. It felt so real and cute and funny and a lovely change up from the norm. Great developed supporting side characters always make a story more satisfying too.

  • Fearful

    By Lauren Roberts
    3 stars

Worst of the series. I think if I'd read straight after Fearless it would've been better. Lots of overlapping events.

  • Watch Me

    By Tahereh Mafi
    4 stars

  • Lore Olympus v5

    4 stars

What a treat to smash through this series. The colours and art are stunning and really set it apart. The story arc is a lot more than simply rehashing Greek gods, there's trauma and banter and romance and I am here for it.

  • The Raven Scholar

    By Antonia Hodgson
    2 stars

Called DNF at 285/643 pages. A great premise that could've been edited of a couple of hundred pages to make it better flow and create tension within the action. A murder mystery where I am totally content never knowing who did it.

  • Reader Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World

    By Maryanne Wolf
    4 stars

  • The Three Lives of Cate Kay

    By Kate Fagan
    4 stars

Told as a reclusive author's memoir through her and others recounting their part in her life. While it took me a while to warm up I was invested by the end and may have shed a tear or two. My fav part was seeing snippets of meaningful conversations from her life pop up and be interspersed into her writing. A great read for bookclub discussion.

  • Before I let go

    By Kennedy Ryan
    4 stars

Refreshing to read a romance about keeping love alive after marriage centered around real life. So much more impactful than a HEA.

  • The Housemaid

    By Freida McFadden
    3 stars

Thought I should find out what all the fuss is about. Not won over yet.

  • Listen for the Lie

    By Amy Tintera
    5 stars

Fun, fascinating read with an unreliable narrator with a head injury and amnesia being accused of murdering her best friend.

  • The Love Haters

    By Katherine Center
    4 stars

I'm fascinated with how light and cutesy the writing was though dealt with loving your body and self esteem in the age of social media in such an indepth and astute way. I would recommend this to older teens and up simply for driving home the message to not measure yourself against others and love yourself for you.

  • Nesting

    By Roisin O'Donnell
    4 stars

A tense, heartbreaking read as an Irish mother tries to leave a controlling relationship and set herself up and her kids up again with nothing. As their children's father he is still part of their lives and constantly trying to get her back. I found myself out aloud saying 'no' don't fall for it while admiring her determination and hope to make a better life. A story that will stay with you.

  • Good Spirits

    By B K Borison
    4 stars

A ghost of Christmas past romance that was pulled off surprisingly well.

  • Beautiful Ugly

    By Alice Feeney

  • Bury our bones in the midnight soil

    By V E Schwab
    3 stars

Vampire novel which has the authors mark of beautiful characters portrayed over a long time period. I get there was too much back story and only enjoyed the last third when things came together.

  • Iris & Me

    By Phillips Werry
    3 stars

Historical novel in verse about NZ writer Iris Wilkinson and her travel adventures.

  • The Missing Half

    By Ashley Flowers
    5 stars

Short mystery that keeps twisting as secrets are uncovered relating to the disappearance of two girls, and the sisters left behind looking for answers.

  • The Lost Saint

    By Rachel Craw
    4 stars

I wanted to like this so much more than I actually did. The story had me at arms length the whole time as I didn't gel with the main character. Glimpses of humour, romance and modern day clashing with historical. Guess I'll always be an Outlander girl.

  • Careless People

    By Sarah Wynn-Williams
    4 stars

An interesting read that shines a light on Facebook ethics and integrity from an insiders point of view. It's hard to understand some of Sarah's decisions.

  • A beautiful family

    By Jennifer Trevalyn
    4 stars

A deceptively quiet domestic thriller set on Kapiti coast in 1980s. I thought the ending was quite abrupt and inconclusive.

  • Nine Girls

    By Stacy Gregg
    4 stars

A captivating NZ adventure read. I think a different name would've had more appeal for boys

  • Good things come and go

    By Josie Shapiro
    4 stars

My most anticipated read this year didn't quite meet my expectations. Josie deals with characters so well and there are some beautiful skateboarding takeaways.

  • The Book of Guilt

    By Catherine Chidgey
    4 stars

A great unsettling read. Catherine perfects a slight air if menace and unease as through a triplet child's understanding you slowly work out what is actually going on in this orphanage.

  • The Names

    By Florence Knapp

Fascinating journey through the iterations of a family's life depending on the name of the baby brother. Engaging, moving and tragic. This is something that will stay with you and leave you pondering.
