  • Blurmp in Time

    By Jim Benton
    5 stars

Jim Benton’s books are always super silly and absolutely hilarious. Blurmp is Catwad’s rather stupid friend and he’s now staring in his own series. This one is a longer story, rather than the short comics of Catwad, but it’s just as funny. Who knew that Blurmp accidentally invented pizza? This is perfect for young graphic novel fans and particularly for boys who say they ‘don’t like books!’ It is bound to hook them in.

    5 stars

Hirayasumi is my absolute favourite manga! The characters are so relatable and the story is wholesome. Keigo Shinzo’s storytelling is wonderful and their artwork is my favourite out of all the manga I read. I’m re-reading the first 4 volumes so that I can catch up to the new volumes that have been released.

    5 stars

  • A Cat from Our World and the Forgotten Witch vol 5

    By Hiro Kashiwaba
    5 stars

This is a wonderful short manga series that is full of heartfelt moments as well as cuteness. This would be the ideal manga series to get someone new into manga and then follow it on with Frieren: Beyond Journeys End, because the vibe of the two stories is similar.

  • Tuck Everlasting

By Natalie Babbitt, adapted and illustrated by K. Woodman-Maynard
    5 stars

This is a wonderful graphic novel adaptation. I’ve only ever experienced this story of immortality in the movie form so it was great to read the story. The artwork is absolutely stunning! I love the way that K. Woodman-Maynard has incorporated some of the narrative text into the illustrations (sometimes the text will appear in the sky or on the walls). I do enjoy when illustrators try something a bit different in graphic novels, rather than just sticking strictly to the panels.

I’m reading the series to my 10 year old each night and thoroughly enjoying experiencing the stories again. I think I only ever read the first 3 books so we’ll be starting to get into unknown territory soon. She wants to watch the Netflix series so we’re going to have to read quickly!

  • Frank and Bert: The one where Bert is scared of frogs

    By Chris Naylor-Ballesteros
    5 stars

I absolutely adore Frank and Bert! I look forward to each of their new stories and they never fail to make me laugh. They are an absolute joy to read aloud and I could read them over and over again. The whole series is perfect for reading aloud to Years 1-4.

  • Flake

    By Matthew Dooley
    5 stars

Matthew Dooley is one of my favourite cartoonists. After reading Aristotle’s Cuttlefish I had to read Flake and it was every bit as wonderful as I hoped. Who would have thought a family feud between two ice cream salesmen would be so heartwarming and funny.

This was a unique story about family, illness, and a sentient typewriter. The story is told in alternating chapters between Olivetti the typewriter and Ernest, whose mother has disappeared. Ernest and his family don’t understand why their mother has just left them without any explanation. With the help of his mother’s typewriter (which he steals back from the pawn shop), Ernest hunts for the truth of his mother’s disappearance.

This was such a beautiful and heartwarming manga series that was wrapped up in just 5 volumes. I wish more manga creators were able to do this, rather than having 20+ volumes. There’s magic, friendship, overcoming anxiety and a perfect ending.

  • Just Like Mona Lisa vol 1

    By Tsumuji Yoshimura
    4 stars

This manga has sucked me in and I need more. Set in an alternate Japan where everyone is genderless until they are 12, when they decide which gender they want to be. Hinase is about to turn 18 and they are still genderless because they don’t know who they want to be. This gets even more complicated when her two best friends confess they like them and want them to choose their gender so that they can be with them. I’m not sure how I feel about the competition’ that ensues but I’m curious to see where the story goes. There’s a bit of a mystery going on with Hinase’s doctor too, which adds a curious other level to the story.

  • Future Boy

By Michael J. Fox and Nelle Fortenberry
    5 stars

As a huge Back to the Future (and Michael J. Fox) fan this book was absolutely fascinating. He recounts the period of time where he was playing Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties (working during the day) and Marty McFly on Back to the Future (filming at night). It’s amazing that he was able to play this character in one of my favourite movies, operating on just 3 or 4 hours of sleep each night for months. I loved all the little details about making the movie and the relationships between the actors. A must-read for fans of the movie and the man.
