"The God of Small Things" is one of my favourite books ever so it was interesting to read about how winning the Booker affected Arundhati Roy and how she was taken to court over it! But the true story is a love between mother and daughter - unconventional and very messy.
A heartbreaking and humorous look at friendship and family.
Another cosy mystery. This one has a lot of asides which don't seem to necessarily add to the plot.
I had no idea NZ had reintroduced the death penalty in the 1950s. This is a heartbreaking story about Government paranoia and being other in a country that's not your own.
Very interesting read considering all the discussion around Shakespeare for our new English Curriculum.
A cosy mystery set in New Zealand. An easy read.
The author's beloved husband dies suddenly and she has no time to grieve due to admin and worrying about her children's health care getting cut off. 3 years later she goes to a remote Australian Island to let her grief out and delves into how other cultures treat death.
Some great ideas about defining moments and making things memorable. Has a really interesting chapter about mentoring.
Thomas' life is dreary and repetitive but all that's about to change when he meets the eccentric movie maker Edgar. But is Edgar who he says he is and does it even matter?
This book wasn't for me. A thriller set in the NZ bush where terrible things keep happen over and over because no one will communicate. Nothing notable happens until the last quarter of the book and then the author tries to hide the predictable ending by throwing in a bunch of twists.
A book about aging and grief. I found it hard to relate to the 40 year old characters who acted like teenagers.
A compassionate look at aging and the life you've led before it.
An awesome collection from some of NZ's finest. Great for teaching resources or just to enjoy!
A fascinating look at one of the world's deadliest diseases. But an even more important look at history, racism and worldwide health care.
