  • The Chalk Man

    By C J Tudor
    3 stars

An interesting enough read with twists and turns and emotional horror to thrill the reader - for a while. The final twist was somewhat predictable and in the end, a rather forgettable tale.

Ned Nathan is a young Māori man who enlists in the army at the beginning of WWII. A member of the famed 28th Māori Battalion, he faces adversity on the island of Crete as he attempts to evade the German occupation forces after the demise of the allied forces. He learns to speak Greek as he befriends friendly natives, enamoured by a young teacher whose family sheltered and cared for him before he is eventually captured and transported to stalag camps in Germany for the duration of the war. Finally reuniting with Katina at the end of the war, they return to NZ where they forge strong relationships with their Greek and Māori cultural roots. An interesting and compelling read that is comprehensively researched and emotionally charged.

  • Shaun Johnson - Perspective

    By Shaun Johnson
    2 stars

An interesting and insightful read. Although there were passages that were compelling, particularly his descriptions of growing up in a cross-cultural family and the mental challenges he faced, too much of the story focussed on game time and plays attempted and plays made.

  • Gai-Jin

    By James Clavell (1993)
    2 stars

Political and social intrigue in 1860 Japan. Europeans have established themselves in feudal Japan and their arrogance and self-promotion butts heads against a societal Japan dominated by the Emperor's dynasty and an ineffectual Shogun. Protagonists aplenty battle each other for preferential position as global influences such as the US Civil War, cotton scarcity and Hawaiian sugar all impact on, and are impacted by economic decisions made in the East. A somewhat convoluted storyline made the reading challenging and it was with a sense of relief when the last page was completed.

A thrilling read that moves like a whodunnit movie. Twists & turns and a reveal that is saved until all other avenues are exhausted.

  • The Perk

    By Mark Gimenez
    4 stars

A good read while you're reading it and holds the tension and thrill until the end. Bit of a double whammy at the end and the sub-plots make for interesting diversions. A satisfying finale when justice finally gets their man.

  • The Stranger Diaries

    By Elly Griffiths
    3 stars

A clever who-dunnit that cleverly does not reveal itself until the end. A good tale whilst being read but in the end somewhat forgettable.

  • The Sword of Kaigen

A great novel for young adult readers who have an interest in mixed genre tales, in this case Dystopia in a Feudal, but modern day Japan-like, Fantasy land of characters with superpowers connected to nature's natural elements.
