A boy discovers a seal skin and the ancient story of seals taking human form. A story of standing up to bullies also weaved into the story. Good read to for year 4/5

  • The Porangi Boy

    By Shilo Kino
    3 stars

Does this story perpetuate the myth around how Māori whanaus operate? Does the ill informed attitudes of the white teacher resonate with people rather than upset? A story based on his truth but none this less disturbing about how it fits in to our world.

  • Rainbow Warrior

    By SharonHolt
    5 stars

This book would be an excellent book to read to students. For those growing up in the eighties there is a great nod to all the things we remember from Torville and Dean to Band aid. This is a good look at New Zealand at the time and the events up to the bombing of the Rainbow warrior. This will be a great addition for those looking at the local histories curriculum.

This collection of non fiction writing by contemporary Māori writers blew me away. It put a fantastic lens on lots of stuff such as the mosque attacks and global warming that gave me lots of ah ha moments. I will be keeping this on the shelf and revisiting it. I also have lots of questions for my Māori friends provoked by what I read.
