  • Careless People - A cautionary tale of power, greed and lost idealism

    By Sarah Wynn-Williams
    4 stars

New Zealander Sarah Wynn-Williams' 'tell all' account of her 6 years as director of global public policy at Facebook is a confronting read (or in my case listen - I listened to the audiobook, which Wynn-Williams reads).

  • A Beautiful Family

    By Jennifer Trevelyan
    5 stars

This novel had me hooked from the first page and was a gripping read to the end. The narrator is a 10-year-old girl who is holidaying with her family at a bach on the Kapiti Coast in 1985. However, secrets, lies and tragedy mean no one in the family will return from this holiday the same.

  • Delirious

    By Damien Wilkins
    5 stars

This is a skillfully crafted novel about grief, ageing and family relationships. The story shifts between the perspectives and memories of Mary and Pete - a married couple who are going through the process of selling their home and moving into a retirement village. Mary, Pete (and the other characters in the novel) are complex and flawed and this is what makes them so real. This book has left me with much to think about. Above all, it has made me consider all the things that are left unsaid between those we care about.

  • 1985

    By Dominic Hoey
    5 stars

As a child who grew up in Auckland in the 80s, some of the descriptions of the city and many references in this compelling novel were familiar to me. However, the hardship that the 11-year-old narrator, Obi, experiences is far removed from my own sheltered upbringing. There's so much to like about Obi and I got completely caught up in his story. As this is Hoey's third novel, I am looking forward to reading his other books.

A powerful and heartbreaking read about how a single decision can change the course of a life.
