  • The First Law of the Bush

    By Geoff Parkes
    5 stars

Set in a fictional town called Nashville somewhere near National Park. Crime/detective writing reminiscent of some of those great Australian authors who showcase the Australian countryside so effectively in their books. Here the NZ bush and small towns play a major role in the story.

Started with such an interesting premise, but would have benefitted from a lot of editing.

I like memoirs and was engaged by this one. However, I would have liked the author to have shown more compassion towards his younger self, or to have made more comments after sharing a memory or anecdote. Often, to me the thought felt unfinished or jarring, because there was not enough discussion following the facts. The story moved quickly on to the next event. When it got to the later chapters, I really enjoyed his analysis and commentary on social class.
