A tunnel tour turned disaster! Liam trying to convince Imogen that the tunnel being created locally is a good thing, finds themselves trapped as the tunnel collapses. Will they be found in time?
The adventure continues in the second instalment. Miles and Jones are trying to escape the blizzard and end up in a cave with magma flows. With the parents being kidnapped, how will they ever escape?
An easy read graphic novel for children. My son was a fan because it could be digested quickly which is exactly what a reluctant reader needs. Plenty of adventure along with imagination and who isn't scared of an anaconda - this has a bit of it all.
Wow, what a mystery! Set in a small rural Australian town where a coal mine has been established and is slowly killing the community. When a son returns to celebrate his 21st birthday and conduct some research for his university studies he suddenly disappeared leaving everyone with questions. Nearing the 5th anniversary as the family gather they work to find the truth behind what really happened. Harper has done it again with this book - worth reading as I struggled to put it down.
A well structured book that can easily be used as a reference or go to guide. While the title talks about food, this really contains so much more than information relating to food. An holistic approach to life with lived references that make it relatable to so many. I'm going to be using this for years to come.
I hadn't realised this was a sequel and it honestly didn't matter. This thriller had me hooked from the start and kept me guessing right to the end. A lot of twists and turns with plenty of bodies accumulating, you just don't know who is behind things. Very clever!
For Connor Clarke life just ticked along in small town Bulls. That is until he's showing around his soon to be grandfather. He's not too excited about the upcoming campervan holiday, but is allowed to bring along a friend to travel the South Island. Boring this trip is not! The two best mates are sent on missions searching for a prize. These are exciting and at times dangerous - this is not a holiday they'll forget!
A brilliant recount of the South African rugby tour of 1981. This encapsulates differing viewpoints of New Zealander's of the time and shows how divided our country was over a game. Told through the eyes of a young boy it portrays a complicated issue in a simplistic way. An enjoyable novel that grows your understanding of a piece of history.
I was so excited to check this out and there's plenty I'm planning on trying. Unfortunately, many of the ingredients I will need to shop specifically for as they're not pantry items for me. Crispy fish cakes were popular in our house.
Absolutely brilliant!! Little Mickey Bloom who struggled with school, is small and seen by others as nothing special discovers her special talent - running. As she navigates life running is there alongside her and allows her to dream big. Through running she sees herself differently. Beautifully written and one I couldn't put down.
A little disclosure, this is not the genre I would normally read and therefore my rating is low. A futuristic tale set in NZ with goodies and baddies. A teenager is kidnapped and taken hostage at a manmade island off the coast of the Coromandel. With individual superpowers and advanced technology they're fighting for her safe return. While all centred around environmental sustainability and ensuring that mining of the seabed doesn't occur. An easy read that would appeal to children and teenagers alike.
The second book in the Tatty Crowe series and it didn't disappoint. Set in the 1870's in Sydney, a time period that must've been so challenging. Tatty is an inspiring young woman who gives the impression of a much older person because of her capabilities. She's running her own undertaking business, shows true kindness to others and yet still manages to uncover atrocities occurring in her neighborhood. A little bit of romance has been threaded into the plot, fitting the era, so very minor. I'm excited to hear that another book is due in February so not long to wait!
So beautifully written, you can't help but fall in love with Cuba. This is written with dual timelines and allows the reader to uncover the mystery that's been presented to the current generation. Through two main characters a plot develops that has you hooked. I enjoyed the mix of travel, romance, mystery and self discovery - this had it all!
A beautiful collection of contemporary Maori fiction. All different, all with Aotearoa at the centre and all so satisfying. Those resonating with me included, Awa by Shelly Davies and A Taniwha Named Taukere by Shilo Kino. So special to pick up a collection and read a piece by someone you know.
I'd heard about this book for some time and when I came across it in the library I thought I'd give it a go. Absolutely fascinating! This gave so much insight into this period of history. As a younger person I never cared too much about history or at least the specifics relating to events. Now with History looking a little different at school, I have reconsidered my opinion (or perhaps it's age) and the events of Parihaka are far more interesting to me. It wasn't an easy read and at times very confronting, but this isn't a negative. I can certainly see the importance of this piece of writing and would encourage others to read 'our stories'.
This is the second instalment in a trilogy, set after WWI and continuing until after WWII. A beautifully written novel that captures your heart. I loved reading about Malta and could envision this so clearly. An eye opener as to this period of history and what people must've faced. Strong female characters, various countries and an air of mystery. I enjoyed this throughout and now look forward to reading the third.
Set in Christchurch after the large earthquake, this focused on two teenagers navigating their life changing health concerns. This has a bit of everything and is so relatable. An emotional journey of first love and experiencing loss. I couldn't put this down and recommend it widely.
So many twists and turns! I thought I had put it together, but boy was I wrong - I just didn't see it coming. McFadden has a knack for keeping you guessing and the suspense in this novel didn't disappoint.
This came as a strong recommendation from a friend and didn't disappoint. A debut novel that has me excited by what comes next from Knapp. Three alternating storylines are woven together to illustrate the differences that can occur when a child is given their name. This deals with domestic abuse with change, hope and family. Honestly I couldn't put this down, yet didn't want it to end.
I really enjoyed listening to this book. Easily hooked into the plotline. If you're a fan of Hoover this does not disappoint.
This was a mystery novel that did not disappoint. While it's part of a series and not the first, this made little difference to being able to follow the characters and plot. For a bunch of retiree's they've still got plenty of life!
