With sentiments shifting between poignant and empowered, this collection of poems deserves a slow, thoughtful read, spread out over many weeks. Mila's compositions are breath-taking, heart-breaking and uplifting!
This is a historical novel about the life and activism of the Maribal sisters, who were involved in a plot to overthrow the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. It's a fictional account, based on facts, that flips back and forth between diary entries and conversations. I particularly enjoyed that the story is presented through the eyes of multiple characters, so you feel like you really get to know the sisters and understand their motivations, their struggles and their courage.
This is a well-written, insightful, autobiographical account of a young Kiwi's struggle with anorexia. Caution: This content may disturb you. However, for school staff, educators, and anyone who work closely with children, this book is a particularly important one for us all to read. One of the many takeaways is for us to thoughtfully consider: What language do we employ when we talk to kids about success and failure? This is truly a worthwhile read!
