A fitting sequel to "the Bell in the Lake". A gripping read, and full of well-researched supportive information about the relevant geography and history.
Initially, the book appears to aim for esoteric literary greatness as a triple star of poetry, prose and philosophy. My desire to complete reading the book began to wilt. Fortunately, White eventually captures a rhythm of weather-beaten prose, interspersed with gollops of raw poetry. Yes, it works and I would read it all over again.
A very interesting read for those who have some acquaintance with Des or the fields of his life's endeavours. Not noteworthy from a literary point of view.
Valuable leadership development handbook, replete with anecdotes and lessons learned from a career working with elite sports teams of New Zealand. Purports to be transferrable to non-sporting leadership but relies on the shaky premise that all readers should understand the fundamentals of sports fanaticism.
Fascinating novel, thoroughly founded in 19th Century Norwegian village life and lore. Gripping throughout and ringing with potential veracity.
An interesting new view on Captain James Cook, mostly looking at his third and final voyage with the use of modern historical tools - especially focusing on the demeanour and motives of those involved. Well worth reading.
