  • The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

    By C. S. Lewis
    4 stars

Reading aloud to the kid. While I’m now not overly fond of the symbolism in this series, the 9 year old listener doesn’t yet see it and is enjoying the books purely as fantasy fiction.

  • The magician’s nephew

    By C S Lewis
    5 stars

  • Katipo Joe

    By Brian Falkner
    5 stars

Started my re-reading of this just before Christmas and thanks to the rain, managed to finish it now! It's a great read and will really appeal to my Year 10s this year. It blends some NZ background with the excitement and drama of Nazi Germany and a boy spy. There is some lovely writing in here too which I plan to use for textual analysis.

  • For we are many (Bobiverse #2)

    By Dennis E. Taylor
    5 stars

Second book in the Bobiverse series continues the story with the growing number of 'Bobs' inhabiting the known (and unknown universe). This science fiction series is brilliant to listen to while gardening and painting.

  • We are Legion (We are Bob)

    By Dennis E. Taylor
    5 stars

Brilliant audiobook for gardening over the summer. I love science fiction and this is a delicious idea. Great narrative but also enjoyed learning about von Neuman probes.

  • Wifedom: Mrs Orwell's Invisible Life

    By Anna Funder
    5 stars

Being a fan of Orwell's books is what initially drew me to this one but it was so much better than I ever anticipated. It made me think so much about the invisibility of women who support "the great and the good" in this world. Beautifully written and endlessly engaging.

  • Water in the Blood

    By Allan Bunn
    4 stars

Read this in preparation for my Year 10 class this year. It's a bit dated in some ways but still an accessible read for my boys.

  • Mary Queen of Scots

    By Antonia Fraser
    5 stars

A classic that’s been on my shelf for a while, so good to have time to actually read it. It’s a balanced and detailed account of the life of Mary Stuart which I found enjoyable.

  • England’s Mistress: The Infamous Life of Emma Hamilton

    By Kate Williams
    5 stars

Couldn’t help but really like Emma and feel sorry for the way her life ended … to rise so high from such beginnings.

  • Middlemarch

    By George Eliot
    5 stars

This is one of my favourite novels to re-read over the summer (in this case listen to while gardening). It’s an acute observation of provincial Victorian society that never fails to engage me. I love it.

  • The political years

    By Marilyn Waring
    4 stars

A fascinating review of Marilyn Waring’s time in Parliament. Lived through this period in history as a child/teenager and it was interesting to read her perspective of things. Politics have become so much more polarised in the decades since.

  • The Last Hours

    By Minette Walters
    2 stars

I like the Middle Ages and Black Death as subject matter but felt completely underwhelmed by this book. I persisted in finishing it because our librarian kindly selected it for me but the writing was not great.
