The writing style is easy to read in this book that follows three friends from Waiheke Island through love, loss, friendship and betrayal. Regrets and loss in middle age, the characters are complex and Shapiro wrote them well. I found the ending too abrupt however.
A historical novel inspired by the true story of a woman physician in 15th-century China. I found this story quite captivating, and the history and culture are incredibly well researched and transported me to that time and place. A well-researched, biographical novel about women helping women. Definitely recommend. I will say, though, that there are some hard-to-read facts in there!
Great twists in this tense thriller, focussing on a great female lead, a former combat surgeon whose life is in a bit of disarray when she is offered a secretive, highly confidential job that throws her into a world of danger and conspiracy. Fast paced and an addictive read.
