Not as good as the first one, but a nice easy listening audiobook that you don’t need to pay too much attention to to get the gist of things.

Still one of my favourite books. A re-reading for me, and it still feels just as relevant and important as the first time. Can't wait to teach it to my class this year!

  • Uglies

This book is great for a younger reader, highlighting how society views surface-level' beauty.' Perfect for my younger classes, but not so much for the adult reader...

Have enjoyed the series, but this one didn’t quite live up to the others. Filled with some of the characters I’ve loved in the other books, and introducing some new ones. The cliff hanger has definitely frustrated me, especially when the next one is not out! Made for a good book to read while waiting in airports.

Loving this series. Second book is slightly less political than the first, but still highlighting significant inequities within Aotearoa. Onto the third.

  • My Friends

Beautiful story about friendship and connection

  • The Housemaid

I get the hype now after a full year of putting it off. Good twists, easy reading and a great ending.

  • Remember Me: Poems to Learn by Heart from Aotearoa New Zealand

Great mix of New Zealand poems, ranging from some oldies to some newbies. Good scope to use while planning short texts to look at in our classroom spaces next year!

  • The Women

    By Kristin Hannah

A gripping, empathetic portrayal of a young American nurse’s service in Vietnam and her traumatic return home, exposing female experiences of war that are often ignored.

  • Chinese Fish

    By Grace Yee

The collection captures the Chinese-New Zealand diaspora with lyrical power and piercing clarity. I didn’t think I would get as into this collection as I did, but I ended up reading it in 2 sittings!
