  • The Housemaid

    By Freida McFadden

Read on the insistence of my teenage daughter before we went to see the movie! I didn't love it as much as she did, but it was an easy, entertaining read with lots of (slightly predictable) plot twists. I think the film was more fun than the book!

  • The Thursday Murder Club

    By Richard Osman
    4 stars

Final camping read - passed on by a friend to while away the time whilst our hubbies spent endless hours fly fishing the Waioweka! Did its job brilliantly and made me chuckle. A funny murder mystery with a difference.

  • Death at the White Hart

    By Chris Chibnall

Not my usual pick but passed on by a friend whilst camping and devoured within a day. Loved this classic 'who done it' set in Dorset in the UK. Really fast paced and kept me guessing to the end.

  • Go as a river

    By Shelley Read
    3 stars

Another camping read! I loved some of the writing and the themes of this historical fiction novel, but the characters and plot were very unbelievable.

  • The Stars are a million Glittering Worlds

    By Gina Butson

Great book to read whilst camping around the Gisborne Distract. I liked much of the writing - especially the mountain climbing descriptions - but found the ending disappointing.

  • Speak to me of home

    By Jeanine Cummins
    4 stars

Loved this book! It's been sat on my bedside table for months, but I spent most of yesterday and this morning curled up fully immersed. She's just a great storyteller.

  • The Bean Trees

    By Barbara Kingsolver

Finally got round to reading this on the recommendation of my mum and loved it. A short, funny, sweet, sad and hopeful little story.

  • The Burnout

    By Sophie Kinsella

Another Summer book bag read. Light and fun - perfect for the beach.

  • Beautiful World, Where are you

    By Sally Rooney
    2 stars

Picked this up in an Op shop to read as I loved the TV adaptation of her book 'Normal People'. Didn't really enjoy it though - just felt too slow, laboured and a little boring and pretentious. I think I'm probably just the wrong generation to really 'get' this book as I know lots of people love her writing.

  • Maybe, Perhaps, Possibly

    By Joanna Glen
    3 stars

Perfect, light holiday read from my Summer book bag!

  • The Second Chance Convenience Store

    By Kim Ho-Yeon
    4 stars

A short and sweet story about simple acts of kindness and second chances. Great beach read!

  • There are Rivers in the Sky

    By Elif Shafak
    4 stars

I enjoyed this book as it was an engaging read with three intertwined stories centred around water. At times very moving, with some beautifully written passages. However, it felt a little superficial as it tried to cover so much and none of the characters were as fully developed as I had hoped.
