  • Standing in the Sunshine

    By Sandra Coney
    5 stars

A history of NZ women since they won the vote is a very comprehensive book of NZ women since that happened. It is a very large sized book and I read a little over many nights. The level of detail and historic photos was fantastic and covered every angle of life for women from that period forward. An awesome read for those interested in our own history in NZ.

  • Rockin' Around the Chickadee - Meg Langslow Mystery

    By Donna Andrews
    3 stars

This is a much later book in series and the story line I never really gelled with. Its focus is a conference in Megs home town ran by her energetic Grandmother. The conference is for people and their families that do not think they had a fair trial. Some interesting characters but the story did not flow for me and the final disclosure felt rushed. This lowered my rating for this story.

Written by a New Zealander who is a direct descendant of the first settlers into The Otago District. It details the years of strife a 100 years before the 1848 journeys to NZ from Scotland building up to the reasons so many left. The tough journey to NZ is covered by real documentation and also the authors ideas on what they faced. A clever book covering fact and fiction as it deals with the real lives of so many of these early British settlers in NZ.

    5 stars

This is a light hearted view of life during and after the Chch earthquakes. With a sentence a page it shows how quickly the abnormal becomes normal as people try to cope with the sudden changes to their lives. The book made alot of Chch people smile. eg 30 is the new speed limit as 50 gets you airbourne. 'Our house ... in the middle of the street' is no longer just a line from a song.

  • Me and Mr Darcy

    By Alexandra Potter
    3 stars

This is a book that uses Mr Darcy's name to sell itself. A young women who works in a book shop in USA goes on a coach tour of England around all the places that Janes Austen wrote about in her books. An annoying male and a Mr Darcy look alike with also a touch of the supernatural make for an amusing but forgettable story.

  • Dear Fatty

    By Dawn French
    3 stars

Overall a good read about her life. Dawn had a very different upbringing to most people living in NZ. Living wherever the Armed Forces took her family within the different layers of the British social system. Acting and travelling were all fascinating but I would have liked more editing and order to story.

  • Dean Koontz Omnibus - 3 Stories

    By Dean Koontz
    4 stars

3 stories in this book 1. Cold Fire 2.The Mask 3. The Face of Fear Cold Fire and Face of Fear I enjoyed as the first dealt with a man who could predict danger to others only seconds before it happened and a woman who witnessed one of those moments. Face of Fear dealt mainly with only a couple of characters in a frightening game of cat and mouse in an office building. The Mask involved a couple and a mystery girl who appeared in theirs lives but I found this less engaging.

The other a couple of generations later when a newly separated wife comes to live in the same house that belongs to her family. Based on the Victorian Coast in Australia.
