  • The Fourth Daughter

    By Lyn Liao Butler
    5 stars

Loved this book. Was so interesting learning about Taiwan in the 1960s.

  • The last lady of the silver screen

    By Deanna Lynn Sletten
    1 stars

Very blah book. Nothing really happens in it

  • The Wrong Woman

    By J P Pomare
    4 stars

A big slow to start, but good once it gets going. Great author. Can’t wait to read more of his books

  • The Love Letter

    By Lucinda Riley
    5 stars

I love Lucinda Riley's books. I thought I had read them all, so I was very excited to find one on my e-reader that I had downloaded and forgotten about. Great book. Keeps you reading to find out what happens - perfect for the holidays.

  • The Greek House

    By Dinah Jefferies
    3 stars

  • Home before night

    By J P Pomare
    3 stars

Not a long book. But it keeps you hooked to find out what happened. Not as good as his other book I read

  • The House on Biscayne Bay

    By Chanel Cleeton
    1 stars

I have enjoyed most of this author’s previous books, especially the ones based in Cuba. This one was very different to the others. Not enjoyable

  • Murder over Gold

    By Rose Pascoe
    4 stars

An easy read. Continues the Penrose and Pyke detective series. This one is set in Clyde in the 1890s.

  • 17 Years Later

    By JP Pomare
    5 stars

A really good mystery about a past crime. Set in Cambridge, NZ. Hard to put down. A bit of a twist or two throughout.

  • The Inheritance

    By Kate Horan
    4 stars

  • The Girl from the War Room

    By Catherine Law
    3 stars

Set in the UK in WWII. A good book but I had hoped a bit more of it would cover the war room. What it does cover (having to work under ground, sleeping underground in air raids, and some of the work ) was interesting, but it needed more .

  • The Heir Apparent

    By Rebecca Armitage
    4 stars

A nice easy read. Would have been better if the author had avoided similarities with the current royal family, and been a bit more original in that aspect. But apart from that, a perfect summer read

  • Julia Eichardt - A life of grit and grace, from Tipperary to Central Otago

    By Lauren Roche
    5 stars

Based on the tue story of Julia Eichardt and Queenstown in the 1860’s at the start of the gold rush , to the 1880’s and the growth of hotels and tourism. Very interesting reading about this area that time, and the familiar names.

  • The Canadians

    By Clare Flynn
    2 stars

This was actually a trilogy. On my e-reader, it was easier to get all 3 at once. Set in the UK in WWII (book one), and rural Ontario (books 2 and 3). About a Canadian family. Easy to read but also quite predictable

  • Demon Copperhead

    By Barbara Kingsolver
    4 stars

Apparently a modern take on David Copperfield (never read it). A sad but also uplifting story set in the Appalachians where stereotypes, poverty and drugs play a large role in the lives of the people living there. Definitely recommend this book.

  • The Last Living Cannibal

    By Airana Ngarewa
    4 stars

Based in Taranaki in the 1940s, with links back to Parihaka and the impacts on the iwi. A really good book. I now need to read his other 2 books.

  • Raven Black

    By Ann Cleeves
    4 stars

A good crime book. I loved the TV series, Shetland, so enjoyed reading the first book that it was created from

  • The Godmothers

    By Camille Aubray
    4 stars

Set in New York in the 1930’s and 1940’s, on the fringes of the NY mafia, from the perspectives of 4 woman

  • Mana

    By Tame Iti
    5 stars

A very interesting autobiography. Good background reading for Social Studies teachers , as there is not a big range of books available on NZ history/events from a Maori perspective.

  • White Mulberry

    By Rosa Kwon Easton
    3 stars

Interesting - story about Koreans in Japan in the 1930s ( not as good as the book Pachinko, which is based on a similar topic). Based in the author’s grandmother. But seemed to end in an odd place. Felt like it needed a bit more to finish and round out the story

  • The American Boys

    By Olivia Spooner
    3 stars

Easy to read book. Perfect holiday book

  • The Girl from the Grand Hotel

    By Camille Aubray
    2 stars

Disappointing, as it seems to be headed somewhere, then suddenly ends. Was very familiar when I started reading it. Then I realised it was a British mini series called ‘Hotel Portofino’’.

  • Empty Cradle

    By Rose Pascoe
    3 stars

Book 8 in this series , set in Dunedin in the 1890s. Easy read

  • The Girl from London

    By Olivia Spooner
    4 stars

I learnt something new, about Germans sinking a NZ boat in WWII

  • The Rose Arbor

    By Rhys Bowen
    3 stars

Easy to read, but also interesting as it was inspired by a village in the UK that the army took over for bombing practice in WWII.
