Great quick read, love a whoddunit, idk why but it just didn't FEEL like a five star...
I'm struggling to summarise my thoughts on this book and have scribbles about 400 words about in on my phone. This book's charm, humour, and warmth painted a picture of a family and their complicated romances in a way that had me laughing out loud (rare for a book to do for me) and sobbing. I had to put the book down, take my glasses off, and cry into tissues. I might have to write my thoughts about this on my personal blog.
A slow burn that gives you pieces of a story that really builds to a heightened climax that's both in the past and present time. I struggled being immersed in the younger narrator's chapters but I really felt the heartbreak of the older characters' perspectives.
Did not finish. Not for me, unfortunately.
Short heartfelt stories that feel very true to life as I know it in Samoa. This collection captures the everyday realities of being young and Samoan - for better or for worse.
Wow. The story gets DARK quicky - some gross and sad descriptions, some real trauma responses, and many moments of characters feeling (and being) absolutely powerless to face the unfamiliar environment they've been thrust in. Maaaaaan the weird is weeeeeird but I love it.
As an Animorphs fan, I had assumptions of what the narrative and character voices would be like. I was wrong, this is different, and it's thrilling! It's the first of 14 books in this series and I can't wait to see what else is in store.
