The multilayers of gaslighting in this one! Firstly, the chief protagonist Nancy; gaslit by her controlling boyfriend and everyone else who has believed his narrative about her. Then Maud, the one person who was prepared to listen and investigate & the misogyny she (presently) tolerates as an effective investigator.
This brings me up to date with Slider and his station-mates. I am impressed that at 77 Ms H-E is still cranking them out, keeping up to date with technology and generational relevance. For anyone interested in historical fiction I would highly recommend her Moreland Dynasty series, though it’s not for the faint hearted at 36 books, with the most recent published in 2024 after an 11 year wait! I have not read many of her more recent series (War at home, Ashmore Castle) but I’m sure they are just as well researched and written as the others.
Secret Santa gave me #6 in this series. It seemed intriguing, so I have started at #1. A good read.
This is #24 in the Bill Slider series, which I have enjoyed over the years. Slider (& Atherton, & Joanna) are like old friends. I particularly adore his boss Porson’s malapropisms - I can imagine the author brainstorming them and chortling madly.
Read on the day we heard Sophie Kinsella has died. #sad
Although this is numbered as #17.5, it would be better read after #16, otherwise continuity is interrupted.
A short "in-between" read in the DS Cross Series. #4.5
