The challenges Dr Timoti faced in his life are truthfully laid bare with rawness and vulnerability. I cried when I read about his early life. I felt a deep sadness at how people treated him. However it was heartwarming to read about a kaiako who saw his potential. If you would like to read a pukapuka that shows how resilence can shine through injustice and trauma in a person’s life; it’s worth a read.
What a page turner and I was on the edge of my seat from the start, frantically speed reading to the end! This book had everything from corruption, secrets, lies, infidelity and betrayal. The reputation of a family name is at stake. The reader will be shocked and drawn in, at how some characters normalised their abuse of power in the business. The star of the book is a detective who is determined to find out the truth, no matter how much she has to give up.
This book weaves the imagery of wai (water) to powerfully connect the main characters from birth to the present day. I was fully immersed in the feelings and thoughts of each person as the narrative unfolded. The themes in this book tackle challenging issues including racism, extremist views and domestic violence. Tina wrote the story in a realistic and thought provoking way. As a reader, I was drawn in and wanting more long after I read the last page.
A very brave account of traumatic childhood events and her life experiences. At the heart of Ali’s memoir is aroha and whānau. She has also impressed me with her resilience and her raw honesty.
An authentic and vulnerable account of Mike’s journey to reclaim his Māori language and identity. His book is well written and an easy to read. Mike’s whānau support was his anchor when he made the life changing decision. I am so grateful he wrote a book. Mike openly shared his journey and wisdom with readers. I have taken onboard a few gems of his advice. As I will be starting my full immersion te reo Māori course in February.
I am a big fan of James Patterson’s crime writing. This book didn’t disappoint with twists and unexpected turns up to the very last chapters. A fast paced and easy read for fans seeking their next thriller fix.
A very funny and at times heartbreakingly sad account of a Doctor’s life on the job in New Zealand hospitals. Ivor’s experiences and his recall of some historical medical events had me reading late into the night. A truthful, with no limits, debut memoir that leaves you wanting more.
What a taonga of a pukapuka for our mokopuna. This book is beautifully illustrated and is a record of Anahera the kiwi’s life. The kōrero is told through generations of whānau who are the kaitiaki and helped Anaheran to nurture and preserve the wild kiwi population.
Set on a rural quiet pā in Rotorua and then progresses to the bright lights of Tāmaki. This memoir recalls times of Māori resistenance with clarity and mixed emotions from the author who is struggling with her identity. This certainly is a story of bravery, dedicated to her mokopuna and is well worth a read.
This pukapuka is set in Tāmaki Makaurau and the surrounding North Shore suburbs up to Mangawhai. During the murder investigation, I loved reading and feeling the tension between the two main characters DS Bandara and Constable Stark. The writer was able to craft a narrative that left the reader wondering right to the end, who had committed the crimes? What a blessing as the short chapters made the pukapuka an easy read. The introduction of a new team crime fighting member was also a welcome addition to the storyline. Finally, I am looking forward to reading the next instalment of the crime fighting trio in Aotearoa.
