"This novel is about a woman called Martha. She knows there is something wrong with her but she doesn’t know what it is. Her husband Patrick thinks she is fine. He says everyone has something, the thing is just to keep going." It is a funny yet tragic story, that made you keep reading just to see what could possibly happen next.

  • Broken Light

Joanne Harris books are, to me, either easy to read or more challenging. This was the latter, but there was a really important message in the book, albeit hard to read! A book about menopause, about mind reading and most importantly about women, their place in society and about consent.

A light hearted read, with characters who you relate to.

  • Notorious

    By Olivia Hayfield

The story is based on the historic tale of Richard III and the 2 princes in the tower, who went missing. However, it is set in modern times and in a completely different setting. To start with I found it hard going as I was trying to equate the characters with their historic counterparts (there is an explanation at the start of the book as to who is who), but once I stopped doing this and just read the story I found it much more enjoyable.

  • Victory Park

    By Rachel Kerr
    3 stars

To be honest, I wouldn't normally have picked this book off the library shelves, but NZ author so double points!! It is well written, and the story is interesting, following a woman and her son. "A stealthily affecting novel exploring the uneven politics of care, caring and carelessness, centered around the residents of Victory Park council flats in Wellington."

  • The Sea Gate

    By Jane Johnson

An intriguing tale set in modern day and WWII Cornwall. I enjoyed reading it.

  • When It All Went To Custard

    By Danielle Hawkins
    4 stars

A fun, light hearted read. Loved the NZ references

  • Devil's Breath

    By Jill Johnson
    3 stars

Kind of compelling, but also a bit strange! A story about a professor of botanical toxicology and a murder.

  • Chocolate Cake for Breakfast

    By Danielle Hawkins

  • The Salt Road

    By Jane Johnson
    5 stars

A mystery / saga set among the Tuareg people of Northern Africa. A really interesting history lesson, set amongst characters who were fascinating to get to know.

  • Holiday in Death

    By J.D. Robb
    4 stars

A murder mystery (one of many with the same main characters) set slightly in the future. Always follows a similar formula but a good entertaining read.
