  • Cross my heart and never lie

    By Nora Dasnes
    3 stars

Graphic novel. About growing up, friendships, crushes. A sweet story and I liked the drawing style. This is a book that reminds us - "We read to know we're not alone".

  • Below

    By David Hill
    3 stars

Well written to keep you on the edge of your seat.

  • This winter

    By Alice Oseman
    3 stars

A short read and sensitively deals with eating disorders and growing up gay.

  • Dream State

    By Eric Puchner
    4 stars

An immersive story. Sometimes charming. Sometimes disconcerting. I love a story (a film, a poem ...) that contains both tragedy and comedy and 'Dream State' has this. There is love and heartbreak, success and failure in the lives of the characters and in the setting of the novel. It is a book that I read with anticipation and this is in part because of the plot structure which has leaps and gaps, forwards and back. I will keep thinking about this story for a long time and put the book in the hands of people who want a good read.

  • A beautiful family

    By Jennifer Trevelyan
    2 stars

It's a novel of unease/Kiwi gothic on the beach. The ending - unsatisfying.

An interesting idea at the centre of the book. A bit philosophical a bit character study. I got a bit bored near the end ... it runs out of puff. It's a 2.5 stars.

  • Salt to the Sea

    By Ruta Sepetys
    3 stars

I did not enjoy reading this book because it is all so harrowing and tragic. Nevertheless it is an important story and reading the historical details and the information about the research Sepetys did makes why she told this story more understandable. I know there are students who will want to read this book and I will recommend it with cautions.

  • The Listeners

    By Maggie Stiefvater
    3 stars

It took me a while to get into this book and I jumped forward and then returned to previous pages. Perhaps the beginning lacked a bit of momentum. In the end I enjoyed the characters and the histrical element. It's probably a 3.5 stars.

  • The foal in the wire

    By Robbie Coburn
    3 stars

Verse novel. A good option for a reluctant reader.

  • Bear

    By Kiri Lightfoot
    3 stars

There is plenty to think about in this book about a teenage boy learning life lessons. While reading I wondered if it could work as a set text in secondary school. In the end I decided, no. A bit long, a few too much going on for Jasper, not for everyone.

  • The traitor and the thief

    By Gareth Ward
    4 stars

Full of intrigue and interesting characters.

  • Shadow

    By Michael Morpurgo
    5 stars

I enjoyed the book which mixes fact and fiction. It is a story of friendship, family and courage. It is a hopeful book.
