When I read short story collections I usually put them down after reading one or two and forget about them for years. A friend gave me this book because the fantastic movie Arrival is based on the titular story. That story was fantastic (though obviously less fleshed out than the feature length film) but what was even more fantastic was how unique all of the stories were. A man climbs the Tower of Babylon for four months, a new technology removes our ability to see facial beauty, a man must overcome the paradox of being devoted to a God who took away his wife to rejoin her. Eerily, one of the stories seems to foretell the AI we know today.
Beautifully honest portrayal of being an introverted boy in Malaysia in the 90’s. The descriptions of life on the farm were so rich I could smell the spoilt produce and sweat under the sticky heat.
