  • The Blade Itself - First Law Trilogy

    By Joe Abercrombie
    4 stars

This is my first Joe Abercrombie book and I can see lots of similarities to the way Sanderson writes his books. A person from the wrong side looking for redemption. A priviledged (early twenties, athletic and gorgeous) character discovering that hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard. And of course he is falling in love with his friend's sister. Then there is the inquisitor who is wondering why he is torturing people when it was a victim to it for all those years. I'm only a hundred pages in and I'm hooked.

The second book in Fitz and the Fool series, following Fool's Assassin. Fitz has found the Fool and rushed him to Buckkeep Castle for healing. So begins half a book of recapping what has happened in the universe. Once new action is introduced, the pace is still laboured. Last quater of the book though is ace.

  • In Love With These Times

    By Roger Shepherd

Not worth it. If you want to know about early Flying Nun or Dunedin in the 80s then I would recommend reading "Dead People I Have Known" by Shayne Carter.

  • Tress of the Emerald Sea

  • Isles of the Emberdark

    By Brandon Sanderson
    5 stars

This is the fifth book in the Secret Projects and further expanding Sanderson's Cosmere Universe. Although technically a sequel, Sanderson includes the original short story in the first part so you miss out on anything. The main theme of the novel is colonisation - from the point of view of an underdeveloped planet with rich resources exploring ways to avoid being swallowed by combating super powers. And what do you do if all of your skills for employment have been made obsolete by technological progress? Oh, and there are dragons.....
