Princesses but make them less pink and sometimes pretty weird. This series has been pretty great. Not super exciting adventures but with enough play on language and great humour to keep me entertained (even on the 10th time through!).

Love these stories, an excellent caper about the ups and downs of adventures! Sifting through the boring times reminding yourself of the possibilities, and some lovely moment reflecting on friendships and their importance.

Beautifully illustrated and quite terrifying. So many ends left untied, will need to reread more slowly. It was too gripping and I churned through!

Excellent graphic, starts of pretty funny and kooky and then you get a real life punch in the guts as you confront all the horrors of social media and marketing! Yay!

Great children’s chapter book. Mostly I love the illustration style. Ends on a massive cliff hanger which is pretty annoying haha

Speechless. An incredible tipping of Huckleberry Finn on its head. Will be buying this for the library at school immediately.

One of the more complex graphic novels I’ve read when it comes to the characters personal struggles. Such a great depiction of what it’s like to feel overwhelmed and be suppressing your emotions. And beautiful illustrations too of course. Highly recommend!

  • Dare, truth or promise

A beautiful, sad but realistic look into two teen girls love for each other and the experience of trying to find acceptance from both themselves and others. I shed so many tears, and unlike so many book in YA (though this is not technically a YA book) I didn’t get frustrated or cringe at the characters, I simply felt deeply for them and the mementoes struggle of being queer in the 90’s (and earlier and now). A great book for topics of struggle, prejudice and self discovery…and an NZ author to boot!

  • All That We Own

Woh. This was challenging in the best way but also a quick read. Some hard hitting chat about the effects of colonisation, inter generation trauma and pākehā’s place in the revitalisation of te reo Māori. All done in an immersive writing style with well thought out characters too boot. I reckon everyone should have to read this book!

Such a great delve into a history that many of us barely know. Challenging at times and thus a slower read as there’s much to think about. I’ll be contemplating the impact of muskets and Christian Missionaries on te ao Māori for weeks (forever?) to come.

Pretty cool drawing style and loved the story line of being a bit of an outsider trying to work out what to do at the end of high school...and falling out with your mates too. Heh.
