Historical account of the life of Juana, a mixed-blood daughter of a slave in Venezuela , born in 1790. She led a battalion of women in the Third Battle of Maturín in 1813, fighting for independence alongside the patriots for Venezuela against the Spanish.

  • The Paris Affair

    By Fiona Schneider
    4 stars

    A pleasant wartime romance novel.

  • Remain

By Nicholas Sparks + M. Night Shyaman
    5 stars

Loved this. A really different story connecting the physical and supernatural worlds. It keeps you guessing and wondering where it can possibly lead. Great study of human nature, the power of true friendship and focus on what is important in life.

  • The Last Love Song

    By Lucinda Riley
    4 stars

I love Lucinda Riley's novels and have read many of them. This one was interesting, did hold my attention, but wasn't up there with the Seven Sisters series in my opinion. Set in Ireland and London, it's about a poor Irish singer, making the big time and becoming a rock star. There are a couple of murder mysteries and love stories woven in and it keeps you guessing until the last pages.

  • Teach Like a Champion

    By Doug Lemov
    5 stars

A book worth studying, rather than just reading. It captures the essence of outstanding teaching in very readable, chapters by a master of human psychology, brain science and educational wisdom. Doug breaks down what it is to teach well into 63 practical techniques. Don't let the length put you off. Really well written, thought-provoking and stimulating. It will help all teachers to sharpen their strategies to help students to give their best and reach their highest goals.

  • Accidental Heroes / Turning Point

    By Danielle Steel
    5 stars

Two stories in one book. Accidental Heroes is a fast-paced novel about a suicidal pilot, planning to ditch a plane over the Golden Gate bridge. A page-turner. Turning Point is about trauma specialists in Paris during a mass shoot-out. Both are a good read.

  • The Secret of Secrets

    By Dan Brown
    5 stars

Exciting, fast-paced, intriguing, makes you think deeply and a real page-turner. Highly plausible.
