  • Stella Maris

    By Cormac McCarthy
    3 stars

It felt pretentious at times and deep at others. An interesting narrator, but a hard-to-believe one. Well-written, but vey bleak. Typical McCarthy for me. I enjoyed The Road and most of No Country for Old Men, but I don't think McCarthy will ever be one of my favourites.

  • Cousins

    By Patricia Grace
    5 stars

I haven't read this since University. Very glad I did. Superb writing and a window into our recent past. Warm and humane. I believe the film is on Netflix now.

  • Burma Chronicles

    By Guy Delisle
    3 stars

Once again, the baffled outsider navigating a new culture.

  • Child of God

    By Cormac McCarthy
    3 stars

A despicable central character and bleak, but beautifully written.

  • Factory Summers

    By Guy Delisle
    4 stars

A enjoyable look at the summer factory job and the world of working men.

  • Fitting In, Standing Out

    By Harold Hillman
    2 stars

    Some fairly obvious advice here.

  • I Am Not Esther

    By Fleur Beale
    4 stars

Nice to read a book I've only known before through student essays.

  • Hostage

    By Guy Delisle
    4 stars

An excellent graphic novel that tells the story of Christophe André's kidnapping in Chechneya in 1991.

  • Notes from Underground

    By Fyodor Dostoevsky
    4 stars

Not everyone's cup of tea, I'll bet. He's a bit all up in his head is our narrator, but darkly funny.

  • Wundersmith

    By Jessica Townsend
    3 stars

Recommended by my daughter. I very much enjoyed the first one, but found this one a little more formulaic. Great world-building and a strong sense of humour. I think it's definitely a classic series that I'd recommend. I may try the others in the series. (Miss 10 recommends Silverborn especially).

  • I am Dyslexic - An Interactive and Informative Guide

    By Chanelle Moriah
    4 stars

This is another useful and informative guide to neurodivergence from Chanelle Moriah. I gained a lot from their other two books on autism and ADHD, and thoroughly recommend them. This one is also a handy literacy guide to the complexities of reading and writing acquisition. Useful reading for all teachers.
