Who knew that a novel based on events that were recorded during the Roman Empire could be so compelling? Was the grateful acceptance of slavery by the slave narrator realistic? Perhaps not! Did the political machinations, the unethical and compromising alliances that those seeking power accept, ring true? Yes! Did antagonist, Crassus, have qualities similar to the "mangled apricot hellbeast" ... I think so.

I received this for Xmas last year. I cannot believe it has taken me so long to read it. Once I started, I could not put it down. It is a compelling memoir. Every teacher should read it. It reminds us that we will never know what the students in our classes bring to school with them and that our actions & words can have unforeseen consequences. Both a cautionary & inspirational book.
The Killing Stones

So only part way through, but ... having killed off the majority of the inhabitants of the Shetland Islands (really how many murders can one remote Scottish Island handle??) Jimmy Perez has moved locale. He is now located in the Orkney Islands and guess what...? More unexplained murders! Two so far. I love Jimmy, such an honourable, upstanding man.
