Really enjoyed learning where the author of the brilliant "God of Small things" came from both literally and figuratively. Made me reflect on my relationship with my Mum. And made me cry. Also so much to learn about India here both past, present and into the future.
Fun to read and clever plot. Loved the school setting and its always good to read another book from such a superb author.
Have always loved this, and I think it stands up to the test of time since it was first published in 1986. Looking forward to teaching it again in 2026.
Loved it! Love Catherine Chidgey. Heard her speaking about the novel at the AWF where she said it is the third in a trilogy; "Remote Sympathy", "Wish Child" and this one. Different versions of the danger of "Othering". She is a national treasure.
Read this with a view to teaching in Yr 12 next year. Complex and beautifully written. Post plague dystopian world where a bunch of musicians and actors are travelling through the landscape because "Survival is insufficient". Several interweaving stories and metaphorical allusions make this a novel which would be very rewarding to teach.
