It may be just that I've read every Jack Reacher novel, but I felt bored with this one. I still love Jack the lone maverick, but he didn't build any relationships in this one, and on reflection, I think that's what was missing.
The conditions that some people live through really make you grateful for what you have. This is a riveting tale of a mother and daughter's determination and belief through terrible adversity. It's beautifully written with poetic descriptions, yet the narrative never falters.
It's a gentle story about the power of books, reading and human interaction. It has some cute characters and relationships, but the ending feels as lost as the main character.
Gripping and unsettling because of its real-life potential.
