  • The Impossible Story of Hannah Kemp

    By Leonie Agnew
    4 stars

I wasn't sure about this book when I picked it up, but thought I should read a NZ author. I was pleasantly surprised and I really enjoyed it. Hannah is a teenager with a lot of attitude and in a lot of trouble. A meeting with a boy in the local bookshop and a magical mobile library slowly changes things for Hannah. A book that gives you a lot to think about and tackles a few issues that might be good for personal responses.

  • Grief in the Fourth Dimension

    By Jennifer Yu
    5 stars

Wow what an incredibly sad and moving book. Kenny and Caroline both find themselves together in a white room which is in another dimension after both of them have died. They are able to see clips of their family and friends that they have left behind and see how life is evolving after their deaths. The author just seems to draw you in and you feel so involved in their families lives and it's clever how all the characters lives end up connected. It's sad, it's very moving and you can see both sides of a conflict. A must if you like sad books. I'm really glad I picked this one up. I will be checking out more of Jennifer Yu books.

  • The Enchanted Greenhouse

    3 stars

Terlu was turned into a statue for illegally using magic to create a talking plant. Six years later she wakes on an enchanted island filled with some cute and quirky characters including talking plants and flying cats. Terlu needs to save this beautiful island but to do so, she needs to use magic. This book is like a warm crochet blanket on a winters night, though I did feel it was a little slow in places so that's why the three stars instead of four.

  • War Games

    By Alan Gratz
    3 stars

Berlin Germany, 1936 Olympics. Evie Harris a young 13 year old girl is competing with the gymnastic team in the Olympics. While staying in the Olympic village she is asked to play a role in the robbery of Nazi gold. Slightly far fetched but I think a good read for middle school. A very interesting Author's note at the end.

  • The Coworker

    By Freida McFadden
    4 stars

I was wondering why the students kept taking out Freida McFadden books so I thought I would give one a go. I chose the Coworker which is about two women working together, one beautiful and popular (Natalie) and one a little quirky and obsessed with turtles (Dawn). One morning Dawn doesn't turn up for work and the thriller begins. It's fast paced, easy and entertaining read with a few surprises along the way.

  • The Widow

    By John Grisham
    5 stars

A lawyer Simon Latch gets a little greedy when a elderly but wealthy client visits him for a new will. Very soon Simon is on trial for murder and he desperately tries to clear his name. I was excited to see that John Grisham had written a whodunit. I haven't read John Grisham for a few years and I wasn't disappointed. I really enjoyed the mystery and the usual court proceedings.
