  • Wicked Never Waits

    By Will Taylor
    4 stars

Great series for kids. Read aloud to 9 year old. Ava returns to Switwick, but unfortunately she's also leading one of the most wicked witches of Oz in with her. Classic fantasy adventure story about whether a group of young friends can overcome challenges to save their school, and questions what it actually means to be wicked.

  • No Words for This

    By Alison Mau
    5 stars

Powerful memoir about this NZ journalist. Brutally honest and heartbreaking at times.

  • Kiss of the Basilisk

    By Lindsay Straube
    3 stars

Raunchy and smutty fantasy romance. The main character was incredibly frustrating at times, but a fun read.

  • The Frozen River

    By Ariel Lawhon
    4 stars

It took about 200 pages to get into the story, this type of historical fiction isn't usually my jam and I found it a bit slow. However, the second half was captivating and I appreciated the 18th century world of Martha Ballard, and the struggles of being a woman in this time period.

  • The One Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

    By Jonas Jonasson
    5 stars

Thanks to Mel for giving this to me. Thoroughly enjoyable read about an old man who has had enough of his nursing home and runs away on his 100th birthday. We learn about his new adventure as well as those he has experienced in his full life. An easy page turner that reminded me of Forest Gump at times in terms of the historical references.

  • Careless People

    By Sarah Wynn-Williams
    5 stars

Fascinating and terrifying at the same time. This kiwi woman worked for Facebook and gives us an insight into the decisions made by Zuckerberg and his team that's lead us to where we are now with the harm social media causes for the sake of money.

  • See You in September

    By Charity Norman
    4 stars

This is the third Charity Norman novel I've read and I have to say I am a fan. This one is about finding out who you really are, or well, who you think you might be (with your family coming to the rescue), after Cassy finds herself swept up in a cult. Easy reading, page turner!

  • Prisoners of Geography

    By Tim Marshall
    3 stars

A book about how geography has shaped the boundaries of our nations and continents. I really wanted to love this book, as I love geography, politics and history. However, it was insanely dry. It took 2 months to get through. Was there anything mind-blowing I didn't already know? Not really.

  • The Casual Vacancy

    By JK Rowling
    3 stars

I was given this 10 years ago, and thought I better give it a read. Got 137 pages in before realising I'd already read it, but it wasn't worth continuing again...

  • The Axeman's Carnival

    By Catherine Chidgey
    3 stars

Interesting story of rural nz, modern media and relationships, though I had to get used to the narrative (weirdly, not my first talking animal novel this year). Not my fav, but worth a read!

  • The Giver

    By Lois Lowry
    4 stars

Going to analyse this with my Year 9s next year so thought I'd better read it again (it's been a good 15 years). Great story, lots to unpack for younger readers.

  • Here One Moment

    By Liane Moriarty
    4 stars

Enjoyable and quick page turner. On a flight from Hobart to Sydney we meet a woman who predicts other passengers "age of death, cause of death". We follow these passengers after they leave the flight and find out whether fate can be fought.

  • Air

    By John Boyne
    5 stars

The final Elementals book. This brings the three storylines back together, and gives us some closure for the characters. Such a good (but dark) series.

  • The School for Wicked Witches

    By Will Taylor
    4 stars

Great children's novel set in the world of Oz. My eight year old thoroughly enjoyed this being read to her, and as well as the obvious connections to the Frank Baum series, there's a lot of cross overs with other children's fantasy witchcraft and wizardry schools.

  • Fire

    By John Boyne
    5 stars

    Great series. One to go.

  • Earth

    By John Boyne
    5 stars

Just like Water, this was a gripping read. Boyne is able to write from such a diverse range of POVs. Enjoying this series a lot.

  • Water

Not what I expected. Drawn in almost immediately. Such an easy read, but heavy content!
