  • The Outsiders

    By S. E. Hinton
    5 stars

Another reread for the sake of teaching to Year 10. I love "The Outsiders" and cry every time. “Stay gold, Ponyboy.”

  • Trash

    By Andy Mulligan
    4 stars

“Trash” is another story I reread since I’m considering teaching it to Juniors this year. Love teaching this story because it’s an interesting look into the lives of three boys who work on a dumpsite in the Philippines, which is such a unique experience for students to explore. I also like how you get a range of different narrative perspectives in the story, and the mystery element is very engaging. Another book that’s enjoyable for both teenagers and adults!

  • The Pōrangi Boy

    By Shilo Kino
    4 stars

I reread "The Pōrangi Boy" since I'm teaching it to Year 9s this year. This story is about a Māori boy named Niko who wants to protect sacred land from having a prison built on it. This is a great book for teenagers as the writing style is accessible, it uses a lot of te reo Māori, and the 'before'/'after'/'now' narrative structure is interesting. Great book for teens and adults :)

  • Giving Birth to My Father

    By Tusiata Avia
    5 stars

This is an incredible collection of poetry about Avia's experience of her father passing away. In the collection, Avia shares the raw and real experience of grieving her father and how she processed the fact that life would never be the same after his death.
